Pastor Wiley Drake is seeking his 10 minutes in the spotlight with this latest shenanigan. As you recall, Black Political Thought wrote about the call for prayer for a rainstorm on this city's football stadium when Sen. Barack Obama delivers his nomination-acceptance speech there next week, dropped by a Focus on the Family Action personality. That ridiculous call has been picked up by Pastor Drake, a former official of the Southern Baptist Convention. Now, is that in keeping with religious teachings?
"Stuart Shepard is invited to lead us in this prayer for rain any day," Pastor Wiley Drake, a former vice president for the SBC, said in an announcement about his plan. "Other prayer warriors are welcome not only to pray for rain but repentance in America as well." Shepard is the director of digital media for Focus on the Family Action, which pulled from its website and YouTube a video in which he asked people to pray for "rain of biblical proportions" during Obama's acceptance speech during the Democratic National Convention in Denver Aug. 28.
According to Worldnet Daily, Drake, an activist who has been targeted by opponents of his Christian ministry for using his own radio program to discuss moral issues in the public arena, said he was saddened to see Focus pull the video. So he's taking up the subject on his "Telephonic Prayer Meeting," held daily for people who have prayer requests. Talk about being a deeply religious person and living by the teachings in the Bible. What a hypocrite.
I feel really bad for the people of Louisiana because a Category 3 or 4 hurricane is about to land in their backyard, but this turn of events is certainly ironic. You notice that Wiley Drake is silent and so is Stuart Shepherd, who were calling for rain on Barack Obama's acceptance speech. Seems to me like John McCain's parade just got rained on in a major way. As they say, be careful what you wish for. My thoughts are prayers are with the people on the Gulf Coast.
