There is a sign at a Citgo gas station in Daytona Beach, Florida, notifying students at the predominantly black Bethune Cookman University of a new rule aimed at limiting their access to the establishment: "B.C.C. -- 1 Student At A Time," which is posted quite prominently on the door. This gas station is located at 600 West International Speedway Boulevard.
Many are crying racism and the incident has prompted a boycott. Managers said students from the school are stealing and the rule is meant to curb crime. They said they have lost hundreds of dollars a month in retail theft. The store manager Michael Amid said that he blames Bethune Cookman University students for the crimes.
Students and alumni said the key to curbing crime is tighter security and hiring more gas station employees and not singling out students. The local NAACP has been notified about the sign and a protest of the store is being planned.
Police said the sign is not illegal but that it does raise some civil rights issues. While I don't live in the area and I cannot accurately judge what the situation is about, on its face it does seem racist to single out the black students and label them as thieves, when there are other universities and colleges in the area. You be the judge.....
